Red is a striking colour. One that catches the eye and creates a strong attraction. Provocative and dynamic, red demands attention. The colour red is used in countless variations in art – from delicate rose-red to vermilion, carmine and ruby red to fire red and blood-red.
Red is a colour of joy and passion. It is the colour of life and energy. It stands for joy, passion and eroticism as well as aggression. Politically, red is the colour of revolution. It is the central symbolic colour for communism and socialism. We encounter it everywhere on the streets, in the media and in advertising as the central signal colour.
In the history of art, red has always played a special role, be it in the luminous robes of saints in religious paintings, the stirring emotions in expressionist works or the abstract interpretations of modern artists.
In the exhibition “Red Romance”, the colour red takes centre stage. Four artists have created or provided paintings and objects for the exhibition, in which they individually interpret the various expressions of red in aesthetic and thematic terms. This is done especially in the context of the source materials, as the artists use everyday materials such as truck tarpaulins, book covers and vinyl records.
